System 3Integrating intuition and rationality for creativity.
System 3 is a higher-order, metacognitively governed mode of cognition in which intuition (System 1) and analysis (System 2) are iteratively integrated through a tightly coupled generate–evaluate–gate micro-cycle. Proposed by Juan Carlos Chávez-Autor, it does not replace Kahneman's dual-process theory; it specifies how the two systems cooperate in real time to produce ideas that are both novel and useful.
In cognitive science, System 1 denotes fast, automatic, intuitive thought, and System 2 denotes slow, effortful, deliberate reasoning (Kahneman, 2011). System 3, introduced by Juan Carlos Chávez-Autor, names a higher-order, metacognitively governed mode of cognition in which intuitive and analytic processes are iteratively integrated — not merely alternated — into creative thought.
System 3 is characterised by three core elements:
A generate–evaluate–gate micro-cycle. Intuitive mechanisms rapidly surface remote associations; analytic mechanisms test candidate ideas against constraints; a metacognitive gate decides whether to iterate, elaborate or commit.
Dual metacognitive control. The cycle is governed both explicitly (conscious monitoring and strategy selection) and implicitly (non-conscious signals of confidence, error, fluency and felt rightness that bias attention and gating).
Network-level neural basis. System 3 is associated with cooperation and rapid alternation between the Default Mode Network (DMN; associative search) and the Central Executive Network (CEN; evaluative control), tuned by neuromodulatory gains.
The account is rendered testable by three behavioural indices that map onto the phases of the cycle: associative-distance density (breadth and rate of semantic exploration), analytic-verification ratio (degree of online checking), and convergence latency (time to the first solution judged both novel and useful).
"System 3 is not a third anatomical module, nor a replacement for dual-process theory. It is an emergent, metacognitively governed mode of cognition in which intuitive and rational processes are iteratively integrated under both implicit and explicit metacognitive control."

Foundational paper. System 3: Integrating Intuition and Rationality for Creativity. Introduces System 3 as a higher-order, metacognitively governed mode of cognition that integrates System 1 (intuition) and System 2 (analysis) through a generate–evaluate–gate micro-cycle, linked to DMN–CEN coupling and measurable via three behavioural indices (associative-distance density, analytic-verification ratio, convergence latency).

Peer-reviewed paper introducing GS-3 (Generative System 3), a separate but related framework that applies System-3 principles to human–AI creative collaboration: the human supplies metacognitive gating and teleological direction while generative AI expands the candidate space.
A geometric/formal expression of creativity grounded in the System 3 cycle, linking intuitive generation, analytic evaluation and metacognitive gating.
Translates System 3 theory into a pedagogical method for deep learning, organised by GRIMᵀ (Generation, Reflection, Integration/Iteration, Metacontrol, Time) and assessed via NUD profiles (novelty, usefulness, diversity).

Applications
From theory to practice
The System 3 Method translates the theory into a pedagogy for deep learning, organised by GRIMᵀ — Generation, Reflection, Integration/Iteration, Metacontrol and Time — and assessed through NUD profiles (novelty, usefulness, diversity).
GS-3 (Generative System 3) applies System-3 principles to human–AI creative collaboration: the human supplies metacognitive gating and teleological direction, while generative AI expands the candidate space — a peer-reviewed framework for Artificial Creativity, distinct from the core theory.
Juan Carlos Chávez-Autor (PhD candidate) is an author, researcher and professor working at the intersection of cognitive science, creativity and artificial intelligence. He is the originator of the System 3 concept, which he has developed through a series of preprints and peer-reviewed publications since 2024.
His broader programme — Evolutionary Mind Technologies — explores how human metacognition, philosophy and generative AI can be combined to inspire empathy and intelligent action.
